Week 8

Search Engines

Although there are several search engines available the two major players are Google and Yahoo.

My first preference is Google and I have used this particular site since the first day. I am also interested in the business aspect of Google, that being Google Adwords and Google Adsense.
As Google is the most popular search engine, it stands to reason that a business would use their advertising programs to obtain maximum exposure.

I use Yahoo on occassion and from all that I have read during my research of search engines, Yahoo is on the way up.

Other search engines I have tried over the years have been Ask Jeeves, and Alta Vista. Alta Vista was once the main competition for Google until it was acquired by Overture and then lost some of its popularity. Overture has since been acquired by Yahoo.

Web 2.0 and Library 2.0

I'm not sure that I fully understand the concept but it appears that both encourage Open Source Software and anyone or anything that wants to promote Open Source programs will get my vote.

Case in point. Sun systems have released their Open Source software (OpenOffice.org) it is their equivalent to Microsoft Office and it is every bit as good as the Microsoft product. The best part; its free.

Summary

This being the last week of The Joneses 2.0 I thought I would include this summary.

In the beginning I did not have much of an idea on writing a blog, so this has been a beneficial experience for me. I have discovered some interesting new sites that I can use for future blogs and some not so interesting - well to me anyway.

I have mentioned on several occasions throughout this blog that my main interest was applying this knowledge for business purposes. This course leaned mainly toward the social aspect of blogging. However, it was still educational.

Thank you Logan City Library for hosting tutorials such as this.

Week 7

Library Thing

Quite an interesting site if you are an avid reader - like my wife - so I will let her know the address.
As I mentioned in Week 3 (Overdrive) I do not read a great deal and can only manage a couple of pages every night (enough to put me to sleep). It can take me weeks or months to read a novel, so I will not use this particular program.

Doppleme

A bit of fun for the social networking community. I have made a new avatar but hav not included it in this blog.

Week 6

RSS and Bloglines

This is what I have been waiting for. The youtube video was very good and explained things very well. I set up a bloglines account but haven't done anything with it. Silly season is upon us and finding time to play around with these various sites is difficult.

As I really only have a couple of main interests, I find that I can control them by use of RSS and don't need to categorise them so, Bloglines is something I may look at later.

Rollyo

I couldn't see the point in using this program and so I never registered for it. Hell, I have enough junk on my computer as it is and don't need to clutter it with more useless information.
